Research and design

After contacting The Danish Music Museum, we started to research the topic of AR mobile applications. The goal here was to increase the user experience by presenting museum visitors with new technology that would allow them to explore the exhibitions in new, novel ways. Our target group was children and school groups. We started by choosing 2 instruments that could be Digi-AR-ized being: multi-neck 19th-century guitar and violin.

Creating the application

As there were already Android tablets at the museum for the visitors to use the museum app, we decided to develop them. We used a marker-based technology with Vuforia in Unity. The application was supposed to be used by pointing at an instrument and then moving in naturally - the way you’d play a real instrument. The app was designed since the museum officials told us about the lack of innovation at the museum.

Testing and EVALUATION

The test design assumed data triangulation - qualitative interviews and quantitative Microsoft Reaction Cards choices. The evaluated feedback from the collected data was overwhelmingly positive. The data showed that the app was fun to use, engaging and innovative since visitors did not experience anything similar in the past. Additionally, our research did not find any similar apps in other museums across the world. Therefore our project increased the user experience for the visitors at the museum.
